ACADEMIC
All teachers will inform the parents of the general grade level expectations in major academic areas at Back To School Night. Goals are set yearly by the staff in academic areas.
GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE
The grievance procedure will be used in areas of academic difficulty or discipline problems. It will be implemented for cases of severe abuse of school rules which may result in suspension or expulsion. The procedure will be used whenever any of the affected people so desire. The lines of communication as stated in this Handbook are to be used first.
The purpose of a procedure is to secure, at the lowest possible level, equitable solutions to the problems which may arise from time to time affecting the welfare of students or teachers. These procedures will be kept as informal and confidential as may be appropriate at all levels of the procedure in order to facilitate reconciliation, communication and the strengthening of the community of faith.
ANTI-DISCRIMINATION POLICY
The Catholic schools in the Diocese of Oakland, mindful of their mission to be witnesses to the love of Christ for all, admit students of any race, color, and national and/or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, program and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the schools.
The Catholic schools in the Diocese of Oakland do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and/or ethnic origin, sex, or disability in the administration of educational policies, scholarships and loan programs, and athletic and other school administered programs.
Likewise, the Catholic schools in the Diocese of Oakland do not discriminate against any applicant for employment on the basis of race, color, age, religion, gender, marital or veteran's status, sexual orientation, national origin, physical handicap, disability, or ancestry.
STUDENT HARASSMENT POLICY
The Diocese affirms the Christian dignity of every student. The Diocese will not tolerate the harassment of anyone. It is the policy of the Oakland Diocese to provide an educational environment in which all students are treated with respect and dignity.
The Diocese prohibits any form of sexual harassment of students whether verbal, physical, or environmental. It is a violation of this policy for any employee or agent of the Diocese to harass a student or for a student to harass another student in a sexual manner. Sexual harassment of a student by a Diocesan employee is also prohibited by federal and state law. It is never a defense of a claim of sexual harassment that the alleged harasser did not intend to harass.
STUDENT TO STUDENT SEXUAL HARASSMENT
This policy prohibits student to student sexual harassment in connection with any school activity at any time including, but not limited to, any of the following:
While on school grounds;
While going to or coming from school;
During lunch period whether on or off campus;
During, or while going to or coming from, a school sponsored activity
Any student who engages in the sexual harassment of another student is subject to disciplinary action including verbal warnings and reprimands, counseling, suspension, and
expulsion.
A charge of harassment shall not, in and of itself, create the presumption of wrongdoing. However, substantiated acts of harassment will result in disciplinary action including verbal warnings and reprimands, counseling, suspension, and expulsion. Complainants found to have filed false or frivolous charges will also be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal.
Sexual harassment also includes intimidation, hostility, offensive gestures or words. See Diocese Administrative handbook for policy and procedure (Sec. 6640)
